Summertime Mahi fishing has been Steady
Summertime Mahi-Mahi fishing has been steady as can be on our charters. Always a crowd pleaser, Mahi-Mahi are also known by Dorado and Dolphin. Our charters have been getting some Mahis on a pretty consistent basis but they are typically on birds. That is why on our charters we are constantly using binoculars to scan for birds. If we find the birds that are exhibiting feeding behavior, the fish will be right under them or in the area. As is typical when fishing for Mahi, we leave a few hooked fish in the water to act as decoys. By doing this the school will remain in the area and we can catch many more.
Alth0ugh there have many fish around, not all are keeper size of 20 inches. We have kept a lot of keepers but expect to release a bunch of fish. This is sometimes disheartening but it is a great sign as these fish will grow rapidly and reproduce for next year. They are still fun to catch also.
When we catch fish that may seem borderline we take great care when measuring them so as not to hurt the fish. If we see the fish is in good shape we can take a quick picture before the release. We ask that you do not try to sneak any past the First Mate as we can get a fine form the Fish and Wildlife Officers. Just call the First Mate over and he will be happy to help you measure him.
Oh and not all fish are small. The Top Gun II recently won the biggest fish category in the Florida International University Tournament with a 31 pound Bull Dolphinfish.
